Remodel Tile
Wet-area tile work done right, from substrate inspection to sealed grout joints.
What Goes Into a Shower Remodel
When a bathroom or shower tile project comes in, the visible tile is the last thing that gets installed. Everything before it matters more. We start by assessing the existing substrate, which means removing the old tile and looking at what is underneath before we quote the waterproofing scope. In South Bay homes, especially those within half a mile of the water, we frequently find moisture damage that the original installation did not address properly.
For shower walls, we install Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane or a liquid-applied membrane like RedGard over cement board. The choice depends on the shower geometry and whether the niche or bench placement makes a sheet system practical. Either way, the membrane gets flood-tested before any tile touches it. For shower floors, we build a pre-sloped mortar bed at a quarter-inch per foot toward the drain, then apply a second waterproofing layer over the mortar before tiling.
Tile selection for wet areas involves more than color and pattern. Porcelain with a coefficient of friction rating above 0.6 is appropriate for shower floors. Natural stone like marble or travertine requires sealing before and after grouting, and the grout joint width needs to accommodate the variation in stone thickness. We discuss all of this during the estimate walkthrough, not as an afterthought on install day.
How a Bathroom Tile Project Unfolds
Site Visit & Written Estimate
We walk the bathroom, take measurements, and identify any substrate concerns. The written estimate specifies tile format, waterproofing method, edge trim, and labor separately so you know exactly what you are approving.
Demo & Substrate Prep
Existing tile comes out carefully. We inspect the wall framing and subfloor for moisture damage, repair what needs repairing, and install fresh cement board or Schluter Kerdi-Board panels where needed.
Waterproofing
Membrane goes on all shower walls and the floor, with seam tape at every inside corner and transition. The system is tested before tiling begins. For bathroom floors outside the shower, we install an uncoupling membrane to isolate the tile from subfloor movement.
Layout & Tile Installation
We mark the layout lines, confirm the centerline relative to the focal wall, and start setting tile. Back-buttering large-format tiles ensures full adhesive coverage behind every piece. Niches and accent bands are built into the layout plan from the start.
Grouting & Sealing
Grout is mixed to manufacturer spec, applied, and cleaned at the right time to avoid hazing. After curing, grout and any natural stone tile receive a penetrating sealer. Caulk replaces grout at all inside corners and transitions where the tile meets a different plane.
Materials We Work With
Bathroom and shower tile projects in the South Bay call for a range of materials depending on the application. For shower floors, large-format mosaics and small-format porcelain mosaics are common because they conform to the curved mortar bed and provide tighter grout joints with more grip underfoot. Shower walls often use large-format porcelain slabs in 24x48 or 12x24 formats, which minimize grout lines and make the space feel larger. Natural marble, travertine, and slate all work well in bathroom environments when installed over a proper membrane and sealed correctly. Decorative ceramic, zellige, and hand-painted tiles add character to accent walls, niche backs, and floor borders without requiring the structural performance of a wet-area tile.
Available In These Communities
We install bathroom and shower remodel tile in Hollywood Riviera, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, and Palos Verdes Estates. Each area has its own housing stock and access conditions, and we adjust accordingly.
