Kitchen Tile and
Backsplashes

Layout-first approach that makes your kitchen tile look like it was always meant to be there.

The Layout Decision Is Everything

A kitchen backsplash or floor tile project lives and dies by the layout decision made before the first tile goes up. The centerline relative to the range, the focal window, or the peninsula determines whether the cut tiles at the edges look intentional or accidental. We dry-lay and mark the layout on the wall surface before any adhesive is mixed, confirm the visual center with the homeowner, and only then start setting tile.

For backsplash work, the wall preparation matters more than it looks like it should. Kitchen walls near the range accumulate grease over time, and adhesive over a contaminated surface will eventually fail. We clean, prime, and in some cases skim-coat the wall before tiling to ensure a proper bond. The substrate behind the tile at the sink and range areas gets a moisture-resistant backer if the existing drywall is not already rated for it.

Kitchen floor tile over a wood subfloor requires an uncoupling membrane to isolate the tile layer from the flex in the floor system. Without it, grout joints crack within a year or two in most homes. The membrane adds a day to the project timeline and is built into the estimate upfront.

Common Kitchen Tile Approaches

Classic Subway

3x6 or 4x8 subway in white or off-white ceramic. The grout color choice changes the whole character, from near-invisible matching grout to high-contrast dark grout that emphasizes the grid.

Handmade & Zellige

Hand-formed zellige, terracotta, and artisan ceramic tiles have irregular surfaces and slight size variation that requires a more flexible adhesive and careful joint spacing to keep the pattern reading cleanly.

Large-Format & Slab

24x48 porcelain slab backsplashes minimize grout lines and create a seamless look behind the range. They require back-buttering and a notched trowel technique to achieve full adhesive coverage without lippage.
