Tile Installation in
Hollywood Riviera

Our home neighborhood. We know these streets, these homes, and what the ocean air does to a tile install over time.

Hollywood Riviera sits on a bluff above the Pacific along Paseo de la Playa and Vista del Mar, where the marine layer rolls in most mornings and salt air is a constant presence. The housing stock here runs from 1950s and 1960s ranch homes on wide lots to newer custom builds that lean into the ocean views. Both types of homes benefit from tile that was installed with the coastal environment in mind from the start, not retrofitted with grout sealer after the damage is done.

We are based on S Pacific Coast Hwy, which puts us minutes from any address in the Riviera. That proximity matters for multi-day projects where we need to return for grouting or sealing after proper cure time.

What Makes Hollywood Riviera Homes Different

  • Ocean-facing lots on the bluff edge receive direct salt spray and marine layer humidity year-round, requiring polymer-modified mortar and sealed grout in all exterior applications.
  • Most ranch homes were built between 1950 and 1975 with concrete slab foundations. Slab tile installations do not need uncoupling membrane, but slab cracks need to be addressed before tiling.
  • Many Riviera bathrooms were designed with smaller tile formats common to their era. Updating to large-format tile often requires leveling the substrate before installation.
  • South-facing patios get extended direct sun exposure. Tile color selection matters for heat absorption, and darker tiles can become uncomfortable underfoot in summer months.

Questions from Hollywood Riviera Homeowners

Do you need a permit to tile a bathroom in the Hollywood Riviera?

A like-for-like tile replacement in an existing bathroom typically does not require a permit in the City of Redondo Beach. If the project involves moving a drain, altering the shower pan structure, or changing the footprint of a wet area, a plumbing permit may be required. We can clarify what applies to your specific project during the site visit.

How does the marine layer affect outdoor tile on the Riviera bluff?

The marine layer keeps outdoor surfaces damp longer than they would be a few miles inland. This means grout on unsealed outdoor tile stays wet for extended periods, which accelerates deterioration. We specify a low-absorption polymer grout for all outdoor work near the bluff and seal it as part of the installation. Expansion joints filled with exterior sealant rather than grout also perform significantly better in this environment.

My 1960s ranch home has original bathroom tile. Can you match it or do I need to replace everything?

Matching vintage tile is difficult because the color batches and glaze formulas from that era are not reproduced exactly. If you have a small area of damage, we can sometimes source close matches from specialty suppliers. For larger areas, a full replacement usually gives a more cohesive result than a patch that reads as a repair. We can show you both options at the estimate and let you decide.

Can you work around our schedule if we rent out the property part of the year?

Yes. We schedule projects around rental windows when homeowners let us know in advance. A bathroom remodel that would typically run three days can sometimes be scheduled over a single rental gap. We build the schedule into the estimate conversation, not after you have already committed.
