Patio and Outdoor Tile
Exterior tile built to handle coastal conditions, sun exposure, and foot traffic for years.
Why Outdoor Tile in the South Bay Needs a Different Approach
Outdoor tile projects on the South Bay coast fail for predictable reasons. Salt air breaks down unsealed grout faster than in an inland climate. Thermal expansion from direct California sun causes cracking when expansion joints were skipped or placed too far apart. Concrete slabs that look level to the eye often drain toward the house rather than away from it, and tile installed over an improperly sloped substrate traps water and eventually lifts.
We address all of this before the estimate leaves our hands. The slab gets evaluated for existing cracks, drainage direction, and surface condition. If the concrete has structural cracks wider than a hairline, we fill them with a flexible crack isolation compound before laying mortar. The mortar bed is built with a minimum quarter-inch per foot slope toward the drain or the edge of the patio. Expansion joints are placed every eight to ten feet in the field and at every change of plane, and they are filled with an exterior-grade sealant rather than grout.
What We Check Before Every Outdoor Install
- Slab condition and existing crack width
- Drainage slope and direction
- Substrate porosity and surface prep requirements
- Expansion joint placement plan
- Tile slip resistance rating for the application
- Proximity to salt air (affects grout and mortar specification)
Tile That Holds Up Outside
For outdoor use in a coastal climate, we specify porcelain tile rated for exterior and freeze-thaw exposure. Even though Redondo Beach rarely freezes, the freeze-thaw rating is a reliable indicator of low water absorption and resistance to moisture cycling. Common formats include 12x24, 20x20, and 24x24 inch porcelain in matte or textured finishes for slip resistance. Natural slate works well on covered patios and outdoor kitchens where direct sun and rain exposure are reduced. Large-format 24x48 porcelain pavers are increasingly popular for contemporary patio designs and can be installed in a semi-dry mortar bed method for large areas.
Pattern choices for outdoor tile include straight-set, offset, herringbone, and diagonal. The pattern affects the number of cuts and the amount of material waste in the estimate, which we calculate before providing the quote.
Outdoor Tile Across the South Bay
We install patio and outdoor tile in Hollywood Riviera, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, and Palos Verdes Estates. Hillside properties in Palos Verdes require particular attention to drainage and substrate movement. Beachside properties in Hermosa need material specifications that account for direct salt spray. We adjust the approach for each area.
