Cream Marble Living Room Floor
Palos Verdes Estates
About This Project
This large-scale floor tile project in a Lunada Bay hillside home covered the open-plan living and dining area with large-format cream and gold veined marble tile. The home sits on a concrete slab, which simplified the substrate preparation compared to a wood subfloor, but a slab on a Palos Verdes hillside can have hairline cracks from soil movement that need to be addressed before tiling. We mapped and filled existing cracks with a crack isolation membrane before setting any tile. The marble tile runs continuously from the living area through the dining space to create a single unified floor plane, which required careful planning of the transition to the adjacent rooms. The veining in marble of this type runs in a consistent direction, and we oriented all tiles with the veining flowing in the same direction across the field for a natural, continuous-stone appearance. The wall tile accent visible in the background used the same marble in a different format to tie the surfaces together.

What We Did
Slab crack mapping and crack isolation membrane application; veining direction confirmed and marked for consistent tile orientation across the full field.
Layout established from the primary sightline from the living area entry; back-buttering applied to all large-format marble panels.
Pre-sealing before grouting; unsanded grout applied and cleaned; final penetrating sealer applied to completed floor.
