Modern Kitchen Marble Floor
Palos Verdes Estates

Sleek modern kitchen with gray flat-front cabinets and dramatic veined marble tile floor

About This Project

This kitchen floor tile project in a Palos Verdes Estates contemporary home used a dramatically veined white and gold marble-look porcelain in a large 24x48 format. The homeowner had previously considered natural marble but chose a high-quality porcelain with a marble print for the kitchen floor specifically because of the higher durability and stain resistance in a cooking environment. The veining on this tile is directional, and the large format means each tile covers significant area, so the layout planning involved placing tiles to ensure the veining flows in a visually coherent direction from the kitchen entry through to the range wall. A key technical decision was the trowel specification: the large 24x48 format required a 1/2-inch square-notch trowel on the substrate combined with back-buttering to achieve full coverage across the full tile face, which prevents the hollow spots that cause cracking in large-format kitchen floors over time.
