Bluff-Edge Patio Tile
Hollywood Riviera

Weathered gray brick pavers laid in a herringbone pattern for an outdoor surface

About This Project

This patio tile project replaced a cracked and stained concrete surface on an ocean-facing lot along the Hollywood Riviera bluff. The original slab had no expansion joints and had developed a series of shrinkage cracks that were allowing water to pool under the surface during winter rains. After demo and slab preparation, we filled existing cracks with a flexible polyurethane crack isolation compound and built a fresh mortar bed with a quarter-inch-per-foot slope toward the drainage edge. The herringbone pattern was selected by the homeowner for its visual movement and its ability to distribute the eye across the surface rather than toward the lot boundaries. Polymer-modified mortar was specified throughout given the direct ocean exposure. Expansion joints were placed at eight-foot intervals and at all perimeter edges, filled with a UV-stable exterior sealant rather than grout.

What We Did

1

Demo of existing concrete surface; crack mapping and polyurethane injection to stabilize existing slab cracks before new mortar bed.

2

Fresh mortar bed built with correct slope toward drainage edge; expansion joint locations marked before tile layout began.

3

Herringbone pattern set with polymer mortar; cuts at perimeter managed to maintain visual symmetry from the primary viewing angle.

4

Grouting with low-absorption polymer grout; expansion joints filled with UV-stable sealant; surface cleaned and sealed.
