About This Project
This kitchen backsplash project in a Hollywood Riviera home involved replacing dated ceramic tile with a white hexagon mosaic pattern that reads cleanly against the white shaker cabinets while the wood lower cabinets and marble island provide the visual warmth. The layout decision was the key step: the center of the hexagon field was set relative to the range hood, not the window, which kept the tile symmetrical behind the focal appliance. Hexagon mosaic sheets on mesh backing require careful seam alignment so the joints between sheets disappear into the overall pattern. We scored and snapped each sheet at the cabinet edges rather than cutting individual hexagons where possible, which gave cleaner terminations. The wall behind the range received a moisture-resistant primer coat before tiling because the previous backsplash had allowed grease to penetrate the drywall over many years.

What We Did
Removal of existing ceramic backsplash; wall cleaning, priming, and skim coat to provide a flat, sealed substrate.
Layout centerline established relative to range hood; dry layout of mesh sheets to confirm seam placement before adhesive was applied.
Tile set with white polymer-modified mastic; sheets pressed firmly and back-checked for full coverage; cabinet edges terminated cleanly.
White unsanded grout applied and cleaned; silicone caulk at countertop-to-tile and cabinet-to-tile transitions to allow movement.
