About This Project
This master bathroom remodel in a Hollywood Riviera ranch home involved full demo of the original 1970s tile and a complete rebuild from the substrate up. The focal wall behind the floating vanity received a dramatic book-matched marble slab panel, while the shower walls and floor were tiled in a complementary large-format porcelain that required back-buttering each piece to achieve full mortar coverage over the Kerdi membrane. The Kerdi sheet membrane was seam-taped at every inside corner and flood-tested for 24 hours before any tile was set. Natural marble requires sealing before the first grout application and again after, which was built into the project schedule rather than treated as an afterthought. The Riviera location, with its persistent marine layer humidity, made the full waterproofing approach particularly important for long-term performance.

What We Did
Demo of existing tile, inspection and repair of cement board substrate, full Kerdi sheet membrane installation with flood test.
Layout planning for marble accent wall with book-match alignment confirmed before cutting; back-buttering technique applied to all large-format pieces.
Pre-sealing of natural marble before grouting; sanded grout applied and cleaned at optimal timing to prevent hazing on the stone surface.
Final sealing of marble and grout joints; caulk at all inside corners and transitions; cleanup and final inspection with homeowner.
