Large-Stone Shower Remodel
Hollywood Riviera

Modern hotel shower with large beige stone tiles and matte black fixtures and grab bar

About This Project

This shower remodel in a Hollywood Riviera home replaced a dated fiberglass enclosure with a fully tiled walk-in shower using large-format beige stone-look porcelain. The format choice, 24x48 panels, reduces grout lines dramatically and gives the shower a clean, almost seamless appearance that photographs well and is easier to maintain than smaller tile formats. A Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane was installed over the cement board substrate and flood-tested before any tile was placed. The grab bar was integrated into the design during the layout planning phase so it lands in the field tile rather than requiring an awkward cut. Large-format tile on a shower wall requires back-buttering in addition to the notched trowel application to achieve full adhesive coverage, which prevents hollow spots that could crack under the thermal cycling the shower wall sees in a coastal bathroom. The matte black fixtures were installed by the plumber after our tile work was complete and sealed.
