Subway Tile Kitchen Backsplash
Torrance
About This Project
This kitchen backsplash project in a Torrance ranch home replaced the original painted drywall behind the sink and range with glossy 3x6 white subway tile. The homeowner chose a medium gray grout to create visible contrast with the tile face, which emphasizes the classic brick-offset pattern rather than blending it into the wall. The layout was centered on the sink window rather than the range in this kitchen, because the window sits at the visual midpoint of the wall run. Subway tile on a galley-style kitchen like this one requires careful attention to the horizontal level line, particularly when the countertop itself is not perfectly level. We set the first course off a true horizontal reference line rather than following the counter edge, which prevents the slight tilt that would otherwise accumulate across the full run. The wall was cleaned, primed, and skim-coated at the range area before tiling began.
